We went to Schonnenberg Palace today regarded as a mini-Versailles. We took the ship’s tour and enjoyed it as much as possible. After seeing through the Palace, we saw the various carriages and mock-up horses that performed in various royal pageants.
Along with a host of others, Helen & Ken, John & I decided to be dropped off in town – Helen and
I were in desperate search of an “Outlet” store we’d passed by yesterday with
the guide. She wouldn’t slow down even for a photo opp, let alone sticking our
heads into a shop. And try as we might –
all afternoon and into the evening, Helen and I could not find that store. We
finally gave in at 7 o’clock when the stores shut anyway.
We were due to back on the ship for lunch and dinner, however we
decided to walk the streets of Vienna to get a feel for the place and simply
enjoy and soak up the atmosphere. We had
lunch at an Italian restaurant and met a delightful couple from Uraguay. Hector was a paediatrician and his wife,
Isabella, a doctor. He was as upset by
the number of people smoking and blowing smoke our way as we were. He has told his patients that if they wish to
continue to smoke, they have to find another paediatrician – he will not treat
their children. Their choice! They were a delightful couple. I gave them a
koala and kangaroo and Isabella insisted we take a Uraguayan coin to ensure we go
to Uraguay in the future.
We had a beer at a pub near the city square, close to St Stephan’s
Church. We had taken the lift up to the
bell tower of this Church earlier in the afternoon for some photo opp’s.
Thankfully the bell was not working – else we would have been in deep strife.
We decided to walk to the Beerhuis, (beer house) that we were told was
in the fun parlour (similar to Luna Park). We tried and tried but could not
find it – even after taking the subway for three stops, walking and walking for
kilometres, so we eventually decided we’d better get back to the boat before it
sailed at midnight. A huge day of
walking today.
