Friday 6 September: Regensburg, Bavaria

We've had a lovely morning cruising on the Danube.  Finally, a restful part of the trip, we've been going flat knacker since boarding.  It's now time to blog.

Regensburg is a city of ~ 150,000 in Bavaria.  It's cobbles streets and narrow alleyways we've trudged looking for a brass bell to add to our already burgeoning collection of Christmas bells, however, being in Germany, it's got to be done! 

We came across one art deco furniture shop - thankfully the shop isn't located in Melbourne - with seven layers of shellac on some magnificent pieces of furniture, I'd be sorely tempted.

We found a bell in a shop, and at the back of the shop was the woman's collection of Christmas ornaments, we felt we were in Aladdin's Cave.  Some ornaments were over 100 years old and some were priced from 150 Euros and upwards.  We weren't tempted!

We walked to St Peter's Cathedral which had the most magnificent medieval stained glass windows dating from 1320.  The oldest part of the Cathedral has a canopied Nativity alter circa 1415/20.  The Cathedral is said to be one of the most striking in Germany.  Building started in French Gothic style for over 250 years in the Middle Ages.

Guided tours are only in German so we couldn't really take a tour, we wished we had Myriam with us - in fact we've said many times on this trip how wonderful it would be to be multi-lingual like Myriam.

We finished the day's walk with a sausage and sauerkraut and a beer at the last and oldest sausage making factory in Regensburg - right on the River.

Back onto the ship to cruise to the next port - Nuremberg.

We found ourselves a nice little spot to have a few quiet G&T's just in front of the wheelhouse so we had a wonderful view heading out of port.
